Acting boss of Manhattan Mafia, Nicholas Morello, and bodyguard Charles Unbriaco are assassinated Sept. 7, 1916, by Brooklyn Neapolitans on Johnson Street on their way to a "peace conference."

The Five Points neighborhood acts as a melting pot for organized crime. Irish, Jewish and Italian gangsters battle and eventually cooperate. Charlie Luciano begins working with Meyer Lansky in this area.

Barrel murder victim, Benedetto Madonia, is discovered at East 11th Street and Avenue D in 1903. Morello and six members of his 107th Street gang are arrested. None convicted.

Believed to be the location of Ignazio Lupo's downtown offices. Lupo was one-time boss of bosses of the American Mafia until his conviction for counterfeiting in 1909.

Giuseppe Masseria was arrested and sentenced to four and a half years in prison after a failed 1913 robbery at a pawn shop at 164 Bowery.

In 1920, Masseria murders bootlegging rival Salvatore Mauro in a daytime gunfight on Chrystie Street. Masseria becomes leading Mafioso in Manhattan with support from former boss Ciro Terranova.

Joe the Boss participates in ambush of rival mob boss Umberto Valenti and his bodyguard Silva Tagliagamba near the curbside liquor exchange by Grand and Mulberry Streets in 1922. Valenti escapes, but Tagliagamba is mortally wounded. Masseria arrested and charged, but case never comes to trial.

Valenti forces believed to have ambushed Masseria Aug. 9, 1922, at Fifth Street and Second Avenue as he left his home. Masseria dodges bullets and escapes.

At the end of an Aug. 11, 1922, "peace conference," Valenti is attacked and killed on East 12th Street.

Ciro "Artichoke King" Terranova dies at the hospital on Feb. 20, 1938, after suffering a paralyzing stroke.
